CHANGING STUDENTS' PERCEPTION ON LEARNING EXTENSIVE LISTENING THROUGH YOUTUBE

Abstract

Teachers used many methods and provide audio from the CD of a textbook in the conventional method. They played the audio recording in the language laboratory. Based on pre-observation, this method makes the students bored. Teaching listening today meets the needs of teachers' creativities dealing with the technology development. Nowadays, internet seems to be part of individual lives especially for the students. Regarding to this phenomenon, teachers should provide teaching sources available on it that also provides audio, videos and podcast. An example of this is YouTube online videos which are popular among students that also present much information as an authentic materials for them. Thus, the research aims to change the students' perception in learning listening through YouTube online video and how itc an be applied in EFL classroom. The method of this research is action research which has been conducted to the first year of EFL university students during extensive listening (EL) class. Students were required to do some activities to listen, do note taking, discuss and download materials as homework. The results showed several changes of the students' perception; the students found that studying extensive listening through YouTube is very astonishing; It also helped them increase their vocabularies and get new information, in addition, the method of teaching listening by YouTube appears to be an effective listening method.
