Adequate instructions bridge struggle readers to read the texts strategically. The four main steps of PLAN strategy namely Predict, Locate, Add, and Note allow readers to have involvement in the text and recognize reading improvement and effort. This study aimed to enhance students’ reading skill using PLAN strategy by applying quasi experimental method.&nbsp; Sixty students of the tenth grade were involved and divided into two groups, experimental and control group. To collect the data, reading comprehension test was distributed to both groups in the pre-test and post-test. The results of the study showed that experimental group made significant improvement on reading comprehension after being taught by using PLAN strategy. Furthermore, there was a significant difference on reading comprehension between the students who were taught by using PLAN strategy and those who were not. It indicates that a complete process of PLAN strategy could strengthen students’ engagement in reading and positively impact on their learning achievement and experiences.</p> Yunani Atmanegara, Sendi Ayu Marselita ##submission.copyrightStatement## http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://www.ejournal.unitaspalembang.ac.id/index.php/eejll/article/view/276 Mon, 31 May 2021 21:39:07 +0700 ANALYZING THE LECTURER’S POLITENESS STRATEGIES IN TEACHING-LEARNING INTERACTION https://www.ejournal.unitaspalembang.ac.id/index.php/eejll/article/view/259 <p>This politeness is the use of an appropriate word or phrase in the appropriate context, which is determined by the rules that are prevalent in society, in a language context, politeness is the use of polite instructions in teaching-learning interaction which the teacher uses to interact with the students, instruct, and guide them in smooth communication. This qualitative study was aimed at analyzing the lecturer’s politeness strategies in teaching-learning interaction. The participants of this study were one class of the 2nd-semester students of STMIK Pringsewu and a lecturer of English subject. In collecting the data, observation and audio-visual material were used. Then, descriptive analysis was used to analyze the lecturer’s politeness strategies in teaching-learning interaction. The results of this study showed that the lecturer mostly used the bald on-record strategy. On the other hand, a negative politeness strategy was rarely used. The existence of classroom management aims to make the class conductive and learning objectives can be achieved. But in reality, not all teachers are able to manage their classes well, especially in large classes. There for, the purpose of this research was to identify the classroom&nbsp; management in a large class. This research used descriptive qualitative approach. The instruments used were observation, interview and questionnaire. The result of the research showed that to handle a large class, the teacher used the conventional seat arrangement. The teacher also used both English and Indonesian in the teaching and learning process in order that the students understand. In making the students understand the teach material easier, the teacher acts as an informer and monitor in the teaching and learning process. The teacher used small groups in grouping students. The teacher gives feedback to the students individually or in groups. It can be concluded English teacher&nbsp; can manage both of physical management and management&nbsp; of students well. English teaching media are very important to help students for get new concepts of the language ability and language competences. Podcasts are audio files available on the internet. the advantages of podcasts, selection of the most beneficial ones, and discusses how to maximize learning from them. The advantages of podcasts are: 1) students can benefit from global listening, even if they only listen to from three to five minutes a day; 2) students will be exposed to a new language; 3) middle level learners have a need for authentic texts and are exposed to a variety of voices. The objective of this research is Implementing Podcasts Approach in Teaching EFL listening classroom: improvement on comprehension. This research classroom action research, which was carried out through four steps. That is, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects of the research were the VIII B grade Students of in SMP N 2 South Bengkulu which consisted of 30. In during this research, the data analysis technique was applied by using qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative was taken from interview, observation sheet, and documentation. The quantitative was taken from the test. The result of this research as follows: in the pre-assessment of listening test, the students were included into "Very Poor" category with means of the students score (48,8). In the listening test in cycle 1, the students were included into "poor" category. with means of the students score (57,4). In the listening test in cycle 2, the students were included into "average" category with means of the students score (63,36). Meanwhile in the listening test in cycle 3, the students were included into "good" category with means of the students score (76,2). In this case there is an improvement in the score from listening test. Here the researcher got the conclusions in listening by using podcasts approach. The use of podcasts approach can improve students’ in listening by adapting the material with the students’ need, interest, etc. It can be started also from the low level to the higher. The research population was the first grade students of SMAN I0 Makassar in academic 2009/2010. The sample was the first grade students that consisted of 32 students were taken using cluster sampling technique. The data here analyzed using t- test.</p> <p>The result of this research showed that the first grade students of SMAN I0 Makassar, in pretest and posttest were different significantly.
